Brookwood screens Inventing Tomorrow’ for Covey Film Festival

Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Staff Report
Brookwood School will open its doors to filmgoers on Tuesday, Oct. 9., for a screening of “Inventing Tomorrow,” a 2018 Covey Film Festival selection.“Inventing Tomorrow” follows six young scientists from Indonesia, Hawaii, India and Mexico as they tackle some of the most complex environmental issues facing humanity today. In the film, each student prepares original scientific research that he or she will defend at ISEF, the Intel International Science andEngineering Fair. The film is directed by Laura Nix, a Chicken and Egg Breakthrough Filmmaker Award winner in 2018.
Nix said she was inspired to tell the students’ story because they are the ones who will be forced in adulthood to face the reality of environmental degradation and climate change.
“It took me the majority of my adult life to come to terms with this reality, but teenagers today were born into this environmental chaos and instability,” she said. “They face a daunting truth about the planet they’re inheriting, as soon as they have the mental ability to comprehend it.”
Nix said she wanted to create an immersive, emotional and cinematic experience about what it would be like to be one of those teenagers today — “specifically a teen who is smart, observant and has some ideas about how he or she might address these extreme problems,” she said.
“Inventing Tomorrow” is open to the public and appropriate for all ages, but the scientific material within the film may be of most interest to students in grades 8 and above.
A tour of Brookwood’s campus will be led at 4:30 p.m. for all interested
parties. The film will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m., and light snacks will be provided after the screening. A $10 donation is requested for admission. All students will be admitted free of charge.
The Covey Film Festival screens films that relate to nature, community and caring — all representative of the great conservation efforts of the region. The festival’s mission is to promote independent films and filmmakers to the Red Hills Region of Southwest Georgia and North Florida.
All proceeds from the Covey Film Festival benefit the Thomasville Community Resource Center, which serves over 500 children in the region, providing after-school academic support along with summer enrichment programs.
“Inventing Tomorrow” will be shown on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 5:30 p.m. in Hines-Watt Hall on Brookwood’s campus. The community is invited and encouraged to attend.
