Brookwood students sail through history in American Revolution at Sea

Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Staff Report
Last week, Brookwood School 11th graders in Ms. Susan Vann’s U.S.
History class researched, studied and re-enacted an American Revolution-era naval battle. Students used primary documents and period costumes provided by The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, based in Washington,D.C. The Institute provides a traveling trunk that assists classroom teachers in framing the conflict as a competition between Britain and France — the world’s two greatest naval powers at the time. The trunk includes resources demonstrating the unprecedented scale of the maritime conflict as well as materials illustrating life at sea, such as primary source images, the tools of navigation and communication, and reproduction clothing depicting a British naval captain, a French naval lieutenant, an American privateer, an able seaman and a common sailor.
