Todd Webb looking to lead Brookwood girls to greater heights

THOMASVILLE — If anyone had any doubt about Todd Webb’s commitment to Brookwood School, they’d just have to look at how far he came to get to the Rose City. Webb, a native of Kentucky, started his new gig as the Warriors’ new head girls basketball coach and assistant athletic director this week. He brings a wealth of experience to Brookwood from his time in his home state.
“I fell in love with the place on the visit,” Webb said. “Just the way they do things here, the way everything’s set up, how genuine the kids are. After our first workout, every single one of those kids shook my hand and thanked me for working them out. That just tells you about the type of kid we have here.”
Webb has been working in different athletic programs in Kentucky and Tennessee since 2006, most recently serving as the girls head coach of Hopkins County Central High School in Madisonville, Ky., where he was second in program history in win percentage.
During his first coaching stop as a boys assistant at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Ky., he got a taste of what greatness felt like on a team that made the state tournament eight years in a row. In Kentucky, that’s not a small feat. Basketball programs there are all in one classification, with 16 big regions competing for the right to make it to the dance. Only the region champions do. That’s the standard he wants to set for the Warriors, who are coming off their second straight loss in the GISA Region 3-3A title game.
“My biggest thing is I don’t want us to accept mediocrity,” Webb said. “Just kind of setting a high standard. That’s kind of the way it was when I was at Warren Central. We tied the state record for most consecutive trips to the state tournament.
“I see a team that’s more than capable of winning the region. We set that goal today.”
Webb also has some experienceworking with some very talented basketball players as the head coach in Kentucky Premier, a Nike-sponsored girls travel ball league, one of 32 in the nation. He coached the Class of 2019 for the last threeyears and had three of his players sign with Division I collegiate programs.
With all that experience, he hopes to get the most out of a hungry team that’s returning a lot of key players and have been together at the varsity level for two years now.
“Probably the biggest change that people are going to see is we’re going to get after people defensively a whole lot more than they have in the past, play a whole lot more pressure defense,” he said. “We’ve got some athleticism that I feel like we can cake advantage of. “It’s time to break through that wall. I worked with (boys basketball coach Drew) Giudice in terms of scheduling and asked him to beef up the schedule. We didn’t schedule to get a lot of regular season wins and have a nice, pretty record. We scheduled to get tested, get pushed, get better so whenever we come into region play, we’re ready to roll.”
