Brookwood football suits up for first practice
THOMASVILLE — Brookwood football is back in action.
The Warriors put on the pads and conducted their first day of practice on Mondaymorning, just a few weeks away from their first regular season game.
"It’s certainly a transition for them to put all this heavy gear on in this heat," Brookwood head coach Shane Boggs said. "Our effort’s been good and we’ve had a good offseason of preparation so hopefully we can just get a little better every day."
Even after the summer, there’s still some competition left to see who will start on Friday nights. Jacob Atkinson, who will see time on t! he offensive and defensivelines, is one of the names that has impressed so far.
"There’s a lot of guys you could mention," Boggs said. "I’m really proud of Jordon Brinkley. He’s stepped into the guard position and has taken pride in that."
New coaches have been another story as the Warriors prepare for the new season. New defensive coordinator Jeff Stanley and new slot receivers coach Rodger Walker have brought some new things to practice. Stanley is implimenting a little bit of variation to the defense, a unit that will have new role players in its secondary this year.
Stanley, who coached under current Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn at Arkansas State, has also brought something else.

Warriors looking to pull from Stanley’s experience with Gus Malzahn at ASU

“I think our tempo is one of our big adjustments,” Boggs said. “For Rodger it’s no big deal because he played in a tempo offense at Appalachian State. It’s one of the things I was excited about with coach Stanley, his experience with coach Malzahn at Arkansas State. They were tempo in the weight room all the way out to the field.
“They joked about how the ball boy better be going full speed. He’s kind of brought some of that over here with that philosophy.”
On offense, Brookwood will have some new players filling new roles around returning quarterback Joe Parker. The Warriors have been busy working on their power run game.
“It’s exciting to watch the guys become more and more confident with it with each rep,” Boggs said. “It’s good to be back out here.
It’s why everybody does all that weight room stuff — To get ready for this. Reps are valuable. We have to invest in every rep.”
