Waldrop, Counts down Panthers

Becky Taylor
Brookwood School brought a 1-2 punch of Rodge Waldrop and Zach Counts and won their first game over Tiftarea Academy April 4,4-1.

Counts smacked a 1st inning homer for the Warriors and Waldrop threw a complete game one-hitter, fanning 12 in the process.

Lane Cole’s 2nd frame triple was the only hit for the Panthers. Brookwood walked two and committed three errors. A combination of the two gave Tiftarea its sole run in the 4th.

Counts hit a solo shot to left-center in the 1st. The Warriors picked up two more in the 3rd, Will Elkins doubling in Christopher May and Elkins scoring on a single by Isaac Richardson.

Jackson Vaughn stole home in the 4th for a 4-0 lead. Camden Harbin had missed a squeeze bunt, but the pitch bounced away just enough for Vaughn to make a dash for the plate.

John Jackson cut into Brookwood’s lead with a leadoff walk in the 4th. He stole second and third before touching home on an error when the Warriors airmailed a throw attempting to throw out Cole on a grounder.

The Panthers had another potential rally in the 7th. Winston Lamb earned a free pass with one out, only to be replaced on the bases by Eli Hannah on a fielder’s choice.

Tiftarea got a break on another error by the Warriors, but Brookwood recovered to throw out the batter at second.

Waldrop limited Tiftarea to few other opportunities. He struck out two in the 2nd after Cole stood at third. Waldrop also flashed the leather himself, robbing William Garner of a hit when Garner’s liner somehow found the glove.

Parks Colwell threw 3 1-3 innings of terrific relief after Cole began the game on the mound.

Colwell struck out four and Cole K’d five.

Counts led the Warriors with three hits and Elkins added two. Brookwood hammered out 11 hits total.
