The Warriors came out strong, firing on all cylinders. However, a fumble by the Warriors resulted in an Eagles touchdown with 3:51 left in the first quarter. Freshman kicker Liam Kelly attempted the extra point, putting the Eagles up 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, Brookwood tied up the score when Beau Spence recovered a fumble by the Eagles in the endzone, resulting in a Warrior touchdown. Junior Graham Jackson attempted the extra point, and it was good, knotting the score 7-7.
With the score tied, the game was on, and Terrell’s physicality was no match for the Warriors, injuring starting Senior Tight End Briggs Daniel.
“They were so much bigger than we were, particularly at the line of scrimmage,” Brookwood Head Coach Daryl Jones said. “They’ve got easily 50 lbs. on us across the front. Our guys were throwing everything they had at them.”
Daniel was downfield when a tackle went awry. The refs momentarily stopped the game as Daniel was assessed, eventually being loaded into an ambulance, where he was taken away for observation.
Visibly startled, the Warriors wanted to win the game for Daniel.
The team took the lead with 3:40 left in the half, after a Jairam Queen Jr. touchdown. Jackson once again secured the extra point, putting the Warriors ahead 14-7.
But the Eagles wouldn’t take that lying down.
Senior Quarterback Josh Cabatit snuck the ball into the endzone with only 2:14 left in the half. After the PAT, the score was tied once more, 14-14.
After a fiery talk in the locker room, the Warriors exited, ready to win the game.
“We talked about our fallen teammate and how much we love each other and hurt for him,” said Jones. “We talked about how we were going to do everything we could to play hard for him.”
The Warriors kicked off to the Eagles, but the ensuing play resulted in a recovered fumble on Brookwood’s own 21-yard line.
Despite the fumble, the Eagles’ line of defense was no match for the Warriors, who were stuffed and forced into a fourth-and-long situation. The Warriors attempted a field goal, but narrowly missed, turning possession back over to the Eagles.
The Eagles took advantage of the possession, as Cabatit found the endzone once again with a rushing touchdown to put Terrell up 21-14.
Brookwood was unable to make anything happen in the resulting play, but they found a bright spot when a penalty against the Eagles put the ball at midfield. However, a fumble by Brookwood and a delay of game, put Brookwood in another 4th down situation with 24 yards to go.
The Warriors opted to punt.
The punt ended up giving the Warriors back the ball after the ball hit a Terrell player’s leg.
Frustrated by the penalty, the Eagles’ defense was stifling, and the Warriors were unable to move the ball along. They tried once more for a field goal, but missed.
With both teams eager to close out the game, Terrell’s Bryse Peachey took the ball all the way down for an Eagles touchdown to put Terrell ahead 27-14 with 4:48 left in the quarter.
Brookwood had one more opportunity to find the board.
A pass by senior QB Pearce Hightower to Queen put Brookwood at the Eagles’ 10-yard line, making it first and goal. However, a penalty by the Eagles put them even closer. Now on the 5, the Warriors were in touchdown territory. With no gain on the second or third play, the Warriors went for it on fourth and goal.
Hightower connected with Brinson King for one final touchdown, closing out the game, 20-27.
The effort put forth by the team was more than Jones could’ve asked for. “It was a ground and pound second half,” he said. “I’ve never been more proud. I’ve never seen a group of guys just pin their ears back and play for each other like I just saw. It was unbelievable.”
However, Jones did note there is still room for improvement.
“We made some mistakes that you can’t do when a team has some obvious advantages, and like a good team, they took advantage of them,” Jones said. “We do a lot of ball security drills, but we have to find a way to perform them better.”
Jones’ main concern, though, is the injuries his team is currently facing. He said he plans to look over the injury report and ensure the team has enough healthy players to take on Maclay in Tallahassee next week, while coordinating with the team doctors.
