THOMASVILLE – On Monday, the Thomasville City Council recognized Mason Howell for his victory at the U.S Amateur a couple of weeks ago.
“Mason Howell played nine rounds of golf in seven days when he competed for and won the U.S. Amateur Championship,” Mayor Todd Mobley said.
“It is one of the most prestigious prizes in golf, where the champion will look to follow in the footsteps of men like Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, Jack Nichalus, Bryson DeChambeau and Victor Hovland,” Mobley continued. “Congratulations Mason and we hope that you do.”
Afterward, he began to read the proclamation, which commended Howell for his achievements and how he has represented the city on some of golf’s biggest stages.
Following the reading of the proclamation, Howell said a few words to the City Council.
“Thank you for having me here today. The support from Thomasville has been unbelievable,” Howell said. “Receiving videos out in San Francisco from family members, friends and people around the community celebrating and watching the tournament was awesome and it meant everything to me.”
Continuing, he said “To have some road signs up around the city before I even got back is truly extraordinary. I would just like to thank everyone in the community and everybody that has been a big part of this and it’s all a team effort.”
Howell went on to again thank the city for their support and how he loved growing up in Thomasville.
Mason will be on the course again next week as a part of the U.S. Walker Cup team. Taking on the Great Britain and Ireland team in the 50th Walker Cup held in Pebble Beach, California on September 6th to the 7th.
