CHULA– The Brookwood Warriors continue their win streak with a 70-51 win over Tiftarea Academy on Thursday night.
The game was the second meeting between the two teams in a span of two weeks, as the Warriors took the first contest 62-36.
Halfway through the opening quarter, both teams found themselves tied at 2-2 until a layup from the Panthers gave them the advantage. Then back-to-back steals off the inbound extended the lead to six.
However, Brookwood did not stay behind for long. Following a layup, Jordyn Jean stole the ball and knocked down a layup on the other end to make it a one possession game. Later, Jean came away with another steal, leading to a layup from Roscoe Jones off a feed from Jackson Horne to tie the game.
Thomas Lee had an opportunity at the line to give the Warriors the lead, but unfortunately both shots rattled out, and Tiftarea capitalized with a layup on the other end to regain the lead.
Brookwood answered back with a three from Horne to take the lead. However, the Panthers struck again with a three and then a steal leading to a floater to make it a four-point game.
The Warriors took the ensuing inbound and quickly moved up the court, where Lee handed the ball to Harrison Chapura for a layup to cut the deficit to two. As Tiftarea brought it up the floor, Jones stole the pass and took it in for a layup and the foul. He converted the and-one to give Brookwood the lead, but a pair of jumpers put the Panthers ahead at the end of the first.
In the second, the Warriors came out aggressive as Levi Williams hit a midrange shot to pull within one. Then Will Stevens fed the ball to a cutting Jones off an inbound from Chapura and Jones finished with a two-hand jam to gain the lead.
Next, Lee hit a three to extend the lead to four. Tiftarea did make a jumper to make it a one-possession game, but layups from Chapura and Jones brought the advantage to six for Brookwood.
With 2:37 left in the half, the Panthers made a jumper to cut the lead to one, but on the ensuing inbound, Chapura found Horne behind the defense he took it all the way for a layup to make it a three-point game.
Later, Horne stole a pass and finished the break with a layup and a foul, converting the and-one to go back up by six. On the next possession, Lee found Horne left alone in the corner for a three to extend the lead to nine as the half came to an end.
Both teams started out slow following the break. The Warriors got on the board first as Jones knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the lead to double-digits. Then Jean hit a three to go up 14 with 5:29 left.
As the third went on, Brookwood continued to keep their foot on the gas, with Jean hitting another three to make it a 17-point lead with 1:51 to go, then a layup and a couple of free throws from Lee increased the lead to 21. By the end of the period, the Warriors were in full control going into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Brookwood stayed steady and shut down the Panthers for the 70-51 victory.
The win marks their 12th straight victory and keeps them undefeated in region play.
The Warriors return home to play against Valwood on Friday, Jan. 23. at 7:45 p.m.
