TALLAHASSEE– The Brookwood Warriors notched their ninth win of the season with a victory over St. John Paul II on Monday night.

Brookwood got on the board first by winning the tip-off, and Eliza Rosser found Klaire Von Hellens down in the post for a layup. St. John Paul II came right back with a pair of shots to gain the lead before Von Hellens grabbed an Ava Bodell miss and went back up for a layup to tie the game.

Both teams held each other in check until a pair of free throws by the Panthers put them back out in front. However, on the ensuing possession, Dylan Simmons threw a near half-court pass to Kendall Moore, who made a layup to bring the game to even once again.

With 1:50 left in the period, St. John Paul II hit a layup to regain the lead. Later, Bodell made her way to the line and made a free throw to cut the lead to one. But the Panthers knocked down another shot to hold a three-point lead at the end of the quarter.

In the second, St. John Paul came out firing, hitting a three to increase their advantage to six. Simmons did make a free throw to cut the lead to five, but the Warriors struggled in the quarter against the defense, which made it difficult for the young team to hit shots.

However, Brookwood did some lockdown defense of their own to keep the game within reach. After free throws put the deficit back at six, a layup from Callie George off a feed from Adelle Ganga cut the lead to four, then with 1:32 to go, Simmons found George again for a layup to make it a one-possession game.

Unfortunately, a three-pointer from the Panthers brought the lead up to five. But a layup from Rosser made it a three-point game, then a steal from Simmons off the inbound, set up a three from Von Hellens to tie the game. Next, Rosser stole the ball again, and Von Hellens made a layup off the miss by Moore to take the lead going into the half.

Brookwood came out of the locker room with Moore making a layup off a pass from Simmons. Later, Moore made a free throw to increase the lead to five.

The Warrior defense wreaked havoc on St. John Paul II, forcing several turnovers and steals, holding the Panthers scoreless for most of the period.

With 3:39 remaining in the quarter, Ganga stole the ball, getting it over to Garner Wells Forrester, who then passed it to George for the finish. A possession later, Ganga gave it to Forrester again, and she knocked down a three to give Brookwood a 10-point lead.

The Warriors added to the lead with a layup from Atraveya Manning. The Panthers eventually got on the board with a free throw, but did not score any more as the period ended.

Moore opened the final quarter with a pair of layups off passes from Simmons, but St. John Paul II tore off an 8-0 run to cut the lead to single digits with 1:19 left in the game.

Moore made a layup to increase the lead to nine, but the Panthers refused to go away, hitting a pair of free throws to stay within striking distance. Moore shut the door, knocking another layup with 16 seconds left to secure the win.
