TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The Brookwood boys basketball team made it to the state championship game last season, falling to St. Andrew’s to settle for a GIAA state runner-up finish in AAA. That feeling of making it and falling short is a feeling they haven’t forgotten.
Head coach Nate VanDuyne said he likes where this team is now as they look to get back to Columbus and win the program’s first state championship since 2008, with three weeks to go in the regular season. He says they’re starting to play their best basketball.
The good thing? This team has been young for the last couple seasons, which means there’s a lot of guys who have been there and done that.
While winning a ring is priority one, the Warriors are not forgetting their other goals along the way.
“Our coach really kept us grounded in the fact that let’s not get lost in the fact that we’re trying to win a state championship and forget all the fun we had throughout the year,” said senior Will Stevens. “We’re taking it one step at a time. Winning the Region championship again, that’s all on our goal right now, and getting to 100 victories for the first senior class from Brookwood.”
“We’re looking for mini victories along the way to what ultimately our big victory will be,” said VanDuyne. “We’ve always been a process oriented program. When you’re so focused on that end goal, it can kind of take away from the process a little bit, so we’ve tried to find a lot of little things like that.”
Brookwood faces region foe Deerfield Windsor on the road Tuesday. Their next home game is Friday when they take on Valwood.
Located in Thomasville, GA, Brookwood School is a private school for grades JK-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
