THOMASVILLE – First the Masters in April. Then Brookwood’s graduation in May. Thomasville’s Mason Howell has had a memorable couple of months.
It continued last week on the PGA Tour, playing at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas. Howell shot a 3-under-68 in round one, followed by a 1-under-70 in round two. He finished 4-under-par, two strokes under the cut line.
Though Howell failed to make the weekend, the experience provided another learning opportunity for the recent Brookwood graduate.
“It was fun, had a great time. I wished I would have played a little bit better, but I like where my game’s at and should have a good week this week,” Howell said. “I didn’t quite make enough birdies for the week but did well in avoiding bogeys. Obviously, I had just one bad hole and it happens. I did a pretty good job of avoiding everything else.”
Howell is slated to play again this week in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. In less than a month he will tee up in his second major championship when he competes in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York on June 18-21. It will be a challenging but fun week for the Thomasville teenager.
“These guys are really good out here. They don’t make a lot of mistakes,” Howell said. “They’re really good at knowing when to be aggressive. It’s their job. It’s obviously pretty cutthroat out here, and everybody’s trying to play their best and trying to win. If you don’t bring your best stuff, you can get lapped pretty quickly.”
Located in Thomasville, GA, Brookwood School is a private school for grades JK-12. Students benefit from a challenging academic program, fine and performing arts, competitive athletics, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
