Brookwood Shuts Down Scintilla

Grayson Plunkett - TTE
THOMASVILLE – For the first time since 2023, the Brookwood Warriors are back in the win column with a 44-0 victory over Scintilla Charter Academy.

Tyson Cochran set the tone early, as he jumped the route and picked off the quarterback for a pick six to start the game.

Following another defensive stop, Cochran returned the punt all the way to the 20-yard line. A couple of physical runs by quarterback Pearce Hightower brought the Warriors to the one yard line. Finally, Hightower took the ball in himself for the score.

Looking down at a 13-0 deficit, the Spartans began to put a drive together until they found themselves in a fourth down situation.

With only a yard to go, the snap went over the head of the quarterback forcing a turnover on downs.

Taking over at the 48 yard line, Hightower pitched the ball over to Cochran who brought it to the Scintilla 36.

Then, Hightower took the ball himself to the 25. After a couple of mistakes, Hightower rolled out and threw to a wide open Brinson King who moved past two defenders and got to the end zone for the touchdown.

The Brookwood defense forced a three and out to bring the red-hot offense back out. However, the Spartans held the Warriors at bay to get the ball back.

A bobbled ball by the quarterback nearly resulted in a turnover. But, an errant snap resulted in a turnover, giving the ball back to Brookwood.

Hightower then connected with Cochran with a one-handed catch and later found Henry Knox for another first down.

Cochran put an exclamation point on the drive with his first rushing touchdown of the game.

Before the half, Graham Jackson knocked in a 35 yard field goal to send the Warriors into the locker room with 30-0 lead.

A perfect bounce on an onside kick gave the Spartans the ball back on the kickoff.

Scintilla knocked on the door of the red zone, but the Brookwood defense refused let them get any closer forcing them to kick a field goal.

However, Ayaan Cheema bursted through the line and got a hand on the ball, blocking the kick and preserving the shutout.

The Warriors drove down the field again and Hightower punched the ball in for his second rushing touchdown of the night.

The Spartans tried to get a drive going, but Landon Huber stripped the ball from the quarterback and Miles Windham fell on top of it for another turnover.

The game was put to bed as Cochran took the option pitch and ran 38 yards for a touchdown.

Cochran ended the game with three total touchdowns (two rushing, one defensive) with 149 all-purpose yards.

Hightower went 3-6 for 57 yards and a touchdown while running the ball seven times for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

“It was nice to go against a team at a similar point in the program as we are,” Warriors head coach Daryl Jones said. “I am proud of our boys’ effort and look forward to that creating some momentum going as the season goes on.

Brookwood will be at home again this week as they take on Southland on Friday, September 12th at 7:30 p.m.
