THOMASVILLE – The Brookwood Lady Warriors kept their hot start to the season alive with a come from behind win over the Pelham Lady Hornets on Wednesday night.
The game saw both teams struggling to get any runs on the board through the first three innings.
The Lady Hornets were the first team to strike in the top of the fourth inning as Mylasa Almond led off the inning with a full count walk. Then on the first pitch of the new batter, Almond stole second and later advanced to third on the groundout.
Next up was Abigail Jones, who singled into right to score the first run of the game for Pelham.
After another single and a hit batter loaded the bases, Kaitlyn Tyson drew a walk to bring the lead to two.
Brookwood starter Ava Bodell did recover by striking out the next batter. But then she gave up a hit into center that increased the lead to four.
However, Bodell kept her composure and struck out the last batter to end the run.
The Lady Warriors managed to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning.
Kendall Moore drew a walk to get on, then proceeded to steal second and third.
With two outs, Katybelle Bennett hit one into left to score Moore to cut the deficit down to three.
A quick three up, three down inning gave Brookwood momentum as they went into the bottom of the fifth.
Following a fly out, Bodell stepped up to the plate and singled up the middle. Then, after stealing second, Bodell came home behind a Josey Hollifield double. Next, Audrey Harrison added a double of her own to score Hollifield.
A third double for the Lady Warriors, this time by Kendall Moore brought Harrison home to tie the game.
Moore went on to steal third and then Lyla James West brought the go-ahead run home to go up 5-4.
Pelham went three and out in the sixth, and Brookwood continued the attack a lead off error put Hadley Halbig on first.
Following a fielder’s choice, which put Anna Claire Pyle on first. Bodell notched her third hit of the game to put two on with one out.
Next up was Hollifield, who hit a bases clearing triple into left to add two more runs to the lead.
Then Harrison brought home Hollifield on a hard grounder to third.
With a four-run lead, the Lady Warriors suddenly found themselves with the bases loaded with the tying run at the plate.
But a strikeout by Hollifield, who came in the circle for Bodell earlier. Eased some of the pressure.
Then a fielder’s choice stranded all the runners. However, the bases were still loaded.
With two outs, another ground ball into a fielder’s choice ended the game as Brookwood got out with the victory.
Hollifield was a force on the mound and at the plate. In the circle, she allowed only two runs, gave up one hit and issued three walks, while striking out eight in five innings of work.
Batting, Hollifield tallied two hits and three RBI.
Harrison also added in with a couple of hits and two RBI.
Bodell only pitched two innings, scattering three hits and allowing four runs but struck out three. She fared better at the plate as she got three hits and two runs scored.
For the Lady Hornets, Alileena Martin paced the offense with one hit and two RBI.
The Lady Warriors will face Pelham again next week on the road on Wednesday, August 27th at 6:00PM.
