WARRIORS ON TOP! Brookwood wins first State Championship since 2008

COLUMBUS – The Brookwood Warriors faced off against the St. Andrews Lions in a rematch of last year’s GIAA 3A Championship on Friday night.

The Lions got out to a quick start, posting an 11-4 in the first quarter. However, a three from Jordyn Jean made it a four-point game. On the ensuing possession, Harrison Chapura blocked a last-second shot to keep the score 11-7, going to the second quarter.

Following a shot from the Lions to bring the lead to six, Thomas Lee responded with a three-pointer to cut the lead to three. The Lions did keep the Warriors at bay, holding a 27-22 lead as both teams went into the locker room.

Brookwood began the second half in the best way possible, with Jean making a three and drawing a foul for a four-point play. Then, down by one-possession, Roscoe Jones converted on an and-one to give the Warriors the lead with 4:44 left in the third.

A possession later, Jones found Levi Williams at the elbow for a three to bring the lead to five. Next, a steal by Jean was picked up by Jackson Thorne, who threw it ahead to Lee for a layup to make it a seven-point game.

From there, the lead continued to grow for the Warriors. They held a 42-34 lead going into the final quarter.

With eight minutes left to decide the State Championship, Jean opened the fourth with a three to put Brookwood up by double-digits. On the ensuing possession, Lee stole the ball and threw it ahead to Jones for a layup to add to the lead.

Later in the period, Jones maneuvered through the defense and made a tough layup with the foul to make it a 13-point advantage. The Warriors continued to pour it on in the quarter, leading by as much as 15.

The Lions could not do anything as Brookwood went on to win 61-46, clinching their first State Title since 2008.

“It was awesome to see this group come together to win the title and overcome last year’s defeat,” Head coach Nate VanDuyne said. “This group has been so tight knit and resilient all year, so it was really important to me to see them end this journey by achieving their goals.”

Brookwood shot 43 percent from the field and 33 percent from deep. Additionally, they won the rebound battle 38-35.

Talking about the second half rally, VanDuyne said, “The team was phenomenal in the second half. We overcame a very poor first half, especially on the offensive side of the ball. We became the aggressor in the game rather than reacting to what they were doing. Again, it showed how tight knit and resilient they’ve been. I’m really proud of their response and their achievement.”

The Warriors end the season with a 22-game win streak, outscoring their opponents 1,439 to 947.
