Brookwood blasts Brooks County in home opener

Grayson Plunkett - TTE
THOMASVILLE– The Brookwood Warriors opened their home slate for baseball with a dominant 15-0 win over Brooks County on Friday night.

The Trojans had an opportunity to grab some runs early with runners on second and third with one out. However, starter Noah Stanfill kept his cool, striking out one and forcing a pop-up to get out of the situation.

After a strikeout led off the inning for Brookwood, Pearce Hightower smacked a double into left. Later, he advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Jarrett Parr drew a walk to put runners at the corners.

Up next was Wyatt Ridgley, who hit a routine fly ball that was dropped by the left fielder, allowing Hightower to score.  Then Miles Windham got a full count walk to load the bases for Graham Jackson.

Jackson hit a ground ball into left to score Ridgley, but a second error by the left fielder plated both Windham and Parr. Then, Jackson got to sign to come home, which he made safely to clear the bases.

The rally continued for the Warriors as Jack Tuten hit a solo shot to go up 6-0 on Brooks County.

With the six-run cushion, Stanfill settled in and struck out the side to bring Brookwood back to the plate.

Barrett Stencel led off the inning with a blooper to left, bringing up Hightower. After taking a ball and Stencel stealing second, Hightower hit a grounder into the outfield, allowing Stencel to reach third.

Parr stepped into the box next after Hightower stole second. A wild pitch brought home Stencel and advanced Hightower to third. Parr drew the second full-count walk of the game to reach first.

Next was Ridgley, who brought another run across to extend the lead to eight. After a strikeout, Jackson came up and hit a rocket to left to score both Ridgley and Parr.

After an error and a walk loaded the bases, Stanfill hit a groundout to score Jackson before the end of the inning.

The Trojans had another scoring opportunity at the top of the third with a runner 90 feet away with one out. However, Stanfill continued to deal on the mound, striking out the next two batters to preserve the shutout.

Brookwood brought another run across in the third to hold a 12-run lead.

In the fourth, Jackson came in for the Warriors to close the game. Brooks County did get a runner off a dropped third strike, but Jackson struck the next two and forced a groundout to bring up the bottom of the fourth.

Windham led off with a single for Brookwood. Then a walk from Stencel and a Trojan error loaded the bases with no outs. Will Tyson was next and drew a walk to bring the 13th run across. Ridgley was hit by a pitch, bringing home another run. With the winning run on third, Landon Huber stepped in and drew a five-pitch walk to end the game by run rule.

Jackson paced the offense for the Warriors with two hits and four RBI. Hightower added three hits and a double, and Ridgley ended with one hit and three RBI.

On the mound, Stanfill scattered two hits across three innings of work with seven strikeouts. Jackson pitched one inning in relief, giving up no hits and striking out three batters.

Brookwood will be back in action on Friday, Feb 13, at home to face North Florida Christian at 6:00 p.m.
