Brookwood boys notch comeback win over Terrell
THOMASVILLE — Brookwood’s boys basketball team was a little battered heading into the weekend. The Warriors were up 15-3 against Valwood at the end of the first quarter on Friday, only to lose the lead and fall to 0-2 in GISA Region 3-3A.
Going into Saturday’s matchup with Terrell Academy, Brookwood was shorthanded for various reasons, including some players sick with the flu.
Down 12 points at halftime against Terrell, the struggles initially appeared to be continuing.
However, the Warriors came out strong in the second half, tying the game and eventually taking a 59-50 win.
“The intensity and focus coming out to start the third quarter was great,” Brookwood boys coach Drew Giudice said.
“We kept offenses and defense pretty simple and just made enough shots in that third quarter to get us back in it.” Trailing 31-19 coming out of the locker room, Brookwood went on a 120 run to tie the game at 31-31 midway through the third, with 3s from Noah Owens and JP Chapman aiding the Warrior’s cause. A layup from Jacob Atkinson brought the run to 14-0 and gave Brookwood its first lead of the game with 2:42 left in the third. The Warriors ended the quarter with a slim 39-37 advantage.
The Eagles took the lead back at 43-41 with 5:26 left to play, but the Warriors kept answering back with key layups.
Some technical fouls on the Eagles — some of them controversial — helped the Warriors’ cause as the final minutes ticked away.
Brookwood actually started the game with some foul trouble of its own, with Terrell getting five points off a 3 and a technical to begin play.
The Warriors trailed 10-1 at one point in the first quarter, but were able to stay in it with the help of a 3 from Cole Ostrom.
Harrison Owens also played a big part in keeping Brookwood in striking distance, with nine first half points and a team-leading 15 for the game. Noah Owens finished with 14.
GIRLS
Brookwood’s girls were in command early against Terrell, and despite a late Eagles run, the Warriors came away with a 46-32 victory.
The Warriors led 154 at the end of the first quarter, with 3s from Mollie Vick and Holland Walker. Fouls did not help the Eagles’ cause, and Brookwood held a commanding 24-9 lead at halftime.
Terrell made it a game in the second half, trailing by 12 at the end of three, but the Warriors were able to hold on for the win. Erin Lewis and Ann Murray Jackson led Brookwood with 12 points each. Jordan Thompson ended her night with 10 points.
