Brookwood alumnus elected Mayor of Thomasville

Staff Report
THOMASVILLE - Earlier this month, Thomasville elected a new mayor, Brookwood alumnus Jay Flowers ‘76. Flowers has been a staple in the community as a member of City Council for a decade.

The journey to mayor began for Flowers as a Brookwood student. He walked through the doors of the school on its first day in 1970. His parents, Margaret “Bobbie” and Langdon S. Flowers, were founding members of the school.

He went on to be the first recipient of the Creativity in Math award for his senior class. On his time at the school, Flowers remarked, “Brookwood instills in everybody the notion that you have to take part. When you’re in an environment like Brookwood’s, not only are you expected to step out in the classroom; the expectation is really that you have to rise and give back.”

After Brookwood, Flowers attended Furman University, where he earned a degree in economics in 1980. His career took on many forms as he worked in industries such as investments, startups, mail order, and retail. For the last 22 years, he has led Core Rewards as President and CEO, which creates business-to-business incentive programs.

His career brought him to various cities across the Southeast, but he ultimately returned to Thomasville. “I always wanted to be in Thomasville. I’ve always loved Thomasville. It’s such a great place to live and raise a family. There’s so much value in the community.”

As Mayor, Flowers intends to continue to take the city in a positive direction. One of his first goals is to develop and improve our local parks. “Thomasville has so many good opportunities for citizens to work together. The city is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment across our 27 parks. We’re going to put a lot of effort into them. One of my first goals for Paradise Park is to add bathrooms to make it more welcoming to families.”

Flowers will serve a two-year term as Mayor of Thomasville. He looks forward to the impact he can have on the community. “It’s our job at the city to provide an environment for everybody to thrive. Many good decisions have been made in the past, but there’s much more to be done.”
