Inspire

Dr. Randy Watts
A theme should be pertinent to the school, should be timely, and should be aspirational. (No one wants their school to proclaim that they want to “Stay the Course!” “Seek Mediocrity!” or “Let’s Hope we Make it Through Alive!” as the theme of the school year.)
Brookwood School’s theme for the 2018-19 academic year is “Inspire.”

Before getting into “Inspire” itself, let’s talk about the purpose of a theme for the school year. There is a lot that happens in a school year, so how can we select one word to represent that entire year?

A theme should be pertinent to the school, should be timely, and should be aspirational. (No one wants their school to proclaim that they want to “Stay the Course!” “Seek Mediocrity!” or “Let’s Hope we Make it Through Alive!” as the theme of the school year.)

Our theme for this year was not selected lightly. We chose several potential themes after much discussion and deliberation in our Leadership Team meeting. Next, our faculty voted on one of three potential themes and provided comments about why the theme that they selected was a great fit for this year. They overwhelmingly voted for “Inspire” to represent this school year.

Here are some of the things our faculty said about “Inspire:”
  • “I love to be inspired, but BEING inspiring seems like a gift only a few are given.”
  • “‘Inspire’ goes along with our mission, vision, and goals, as well as creativity. We are constantly nurturing, encouraging, and motivating our students to learn, so I think it’s the perfect choice.”
  • “Over the last few years, we’ve been building leaders. This year, with the theme ‘inspire,’ our students will have the opportunity to inspire others to reach their full potential as a Brookwood student.”
  • “We have so much negativity in our world. Being inspired can change how people view the world. Our school already does a great job at inspiring the world around us.”
  • “I hope that our teaching will inspire all students to do the best they can now and in future years.”
  • “I would hope the environment and faculty at Brookwood School would (inspire) encourage, motivate, stimulate, or influence a student to move in direction of self-discovery to unveil his or her passions and talents to take him or her on life’s journey.”
  • “It is vital that we inspire students to reach their full potential. It’s human nature to take the easy way out; it is important we have people that inspire us to go the extra step.”
  • “Inspiring students should be the core of what we do as educators. By inspiring students, we empower them to achieve through perseverance.”
  • “Our work each and every day should be to inspire our students and colleagues with our commitment and dedication. The word inspire does help us think about integrity and can provide a great roadmap for our decision making.”

Inspiring words, indeed.

As we continue to build leaders, we are further seeking to inspire our students to reach their full potential.
One step further, we challenge our students to inspire those around them.
