THOMASVILLE — Coming off a 33-10 loss across the Georgia-Florida border against Lafayette, Brookwood football will be hoping for a rebound performance when they travel to play Pinewood Christian tonight. The Warriors (2-1) were able to keep their last game close for the first half, but after taking a 3-0 lead in the second, the Hornets scored 33 straight points and eventually took the game.
“They’re a really good team,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “They’ve got good big guys and good fast guys. I want to give them a lot of credit but I feel like we missed so many opportunities. We played a lot better than we did against Marshall and Terrell, but we still aren’t paying enough attention todetails.” Two big chances stood out to Boggs. On their first possession of the game, a fake punt advanced the ball to Lafayette’s 30, but Brookwood could not get anything out of the drive.
Later, with the game tied at 0-0 with six minutes left in the second quarter, the Warriors got to the Hornet 9-yard line but only managed a field goal.
The made kick from Jonathan Burns led to the only points Brookwood scored until the fourth quarter. The Warriors’ running game that thrived behind Vincent Yokley in the team’s first two games never got going, with only 47 rushing yards on 34 carries.
“The thing that we have to understand is the closer you get to the goal line, the harder it gets,” Boggs said. “You know what you’re going to get coverage-wise, the box compresses, there’s less space. We had first and goal from the nine and first and goal from the five on a different possession and scored three points. We need to score 14 right there. “If you use history as a predictor, I bet you’ll see us be better in those situations this week.”
On defense, the Warriors want to avoid a repeat of the number of consecutive points allowed against Lafayette. Achieving that requires players to know their gap responsibilities and where they fit in the defense.
“When you don’t do that versus a really fast player, he’s in the newspaper, and it happened to us several times the other night,” Boggs said.
Pinewood finished 7-5 last year. The Warriors were supposed to face the Patriots last year, but due to last year’s hurricane, the game was canceled. It will be the first time the two teams have met since 2005.
Their offense will be led by senior quarterback Jeffrey Young and junior running back Garlon Rodgers.
“It’s a typical Pinewood team,” Boggs said.
“They’ve got a defensive lineman who’s 6-foot-3, 354 and can move. He’s athletic. Their interior linemen are huge and can move. Their team speed is probably a lot like ours. It’ll be a good matchup.”
