Despite suffering a 33-10 loss Friday night to host Lafayette High School, Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said his Warriors were closer than the score indicated.
“There were just a lot of things and to be honest with you, they just whipped us in all three phases,” he said as Brookwood fell to 2-1. Lafayette was playing its season opener.
“But there’s times where you’re just that close and you feel like you’ve got a shot. Ultimately, the story of the game is, whatever the position, we’ve got 1-on-1 matches and we have to be able to attack leverage and certain aiming point. We mess up the aiming point and it looks like we’re getting whipped and it’s not always that way.”
Those little details caught up with the Warriors after halftime as the Hornets pulled away. Lafayette scored 33 straight points after falling behind 3-0 midway through the second quarter before Brookwood scored in the game’s final minute.
Trailing 6-3 after the Hornets answered a 25-yard Jonathan Burns field goal with a 22-yard touchdown run from Jaxson Beach with 2:56 left in the first half, Brookwood gave Lafayette a chance to begin taking control.
Lafayette’s Malik Jennings intercepted a Joe Parker pass and returned it to the Brookwood 16 with 2:05 remaining in the second quarter and three plays later, Beach found Ben Massey from 18 yards out for a 12-3 halftime lead.
Behind a strong rushing attack, the Hornets piled it on from there.
After a muffed punt gave Brookwood the ball in Hornet territory with 4:49 remaining in the third, the Warriors quickly moved to the LHS 3. However, in four tries from there, the Warriors were unable to penetrate the Lafayette defense with Vincent Yokley losing two yards on fourth down from the 1.
“When you have first-and-goal, you’ve got to score,” Boggs said. “We didn’t get the job done.”
Brookwood, which had ran the ball well in its undefeated start to the season, was held to 47 yards rushing on 34 carries.
“We run the same stuff they do, they just executed it better,” Boggs said. “And that’s why they’re up 33-3.”
That inability to churn out yards on the ground proved costly in the second half.
