Westfield wallops Brookwood

Clint Thompson - TTE
THOMASVILLE – The Brookwood Warriors failed to deliver a win in their season opener on Saturday. In fact, a 28-point second quarter by the visiting Westfield Hornets put the second half into a running clock.

The Hornets threw touchdown passes on all five of their first-half possessions, leading to a 44-0 rout of the Warriors. It was a humbling debut for Brookwood and first-year head coach Daryl Jones.

“That’s a program. You can tell that for quite some time they have really put some effort into all things football, be it player development, be it scheme; offense, defense and special teams; in the weight room. They do a fine job of coaching. What a great scheme they have on both sides of the ball,” Jones said.

Westfield connected on six touchdown passes in the game, covering 23, 31, 21, 42, 18 and 50 yards.

Brookwood’s offense had momentum on its first drive of the game. Starting at its own 22, the Warriors moved to the Pirates 47 before having a punt blocked. The Warriors debuted a more deliberate offense, running the ball 28 times to nine passes.

“I don’t know that up tempo was really good for us last year. We’re going to try to control the clock the best we can. It’s kind of the basketball equivalent of walk the ball up the court,” Jones said. “We’re going to try to possess the ball.

“We just made too many mistakes. You can’t put the ball on the ground against a good football team. I can’t have delay of game penalties on coach Jones. Our whole theme of no excuses, we’re not going to make any excuses. We’re going to go back to work Monday and get ready for a pretty good Terrell program.”

Quarterback Pearce Hightower threw for 42 yards and ran for 11.
