Survive & Advance! Lady Warrior Soccer Edges Terrell Academy in PKs

Brookwood Girls Soccer had just enough left in the tank to finish out a marathon night of playoff action at Warrior Stadium. The GISA 1st Round matchup with Region foe Terrell Academy couldn't be decided in regulation. And then two extra overtime periods weren't enough to break the 2-2 tie, either.

It took 9 penalty kicks from both sides before the Lady Warriors survived and were able to advance to the State Quarterfinals.

Having defeated Terrell Academy in the regular season by scores of 7-1 and 6-0, this was not expected to be the thriller that played out. Terrell Academy scored first in the game's first few minutes on a transition goal to take the early lead. Eliza Miller nailed a high-arching kick from about 35 yards out to knot the score at 1-1 with just over 7 minutes to go until Half.

Brookwood's offense, which controlled possession the majority of the game and severely out-shot the Lady Eagles, came out aggressive to start the second half. Hendley Bryan's corner kick found the back of the net less than 10 minutes in. It appeared Brookwood had gained momentum and would seize control, but numerous Lady Warrior shot attempts just couldn't get past the Terrell goalkeeper to break open the game. The visiting Lady Eagles tied the game with 15 minutes to go.

A controversial call may have ended the game earlier and not led to as much extra-time excitement. With about 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Jordan Burns put a shot on goal for Brookwood. For all in attendance, the ball appeared to break the plane of the goal line before being swept back across by the Terrell Academy keeper. After a lengthy delay and discussion between officials there was no goal awarded.

Two extra 10-minute halves of overtime were not enough to see any goals scored and break the tie. The two teams went to PKs after 100 minutes of soccer.

Things looked bleak for the Lady Warriors after Terrell's first three PK attempts were successful. Brookwood, having made one of their first two attempts, needed Jordan Burns to net hers. The senior calmly pushed her attempt to the right side of the goal and found the back of the net. Terrell's fourth attempt sailed over the top crossbar and gave the Lady Warriors life. However, an unsuccessful fourth attempt by Brookwood gave Terrell a chance to end the game.

Trailing 3-2 and in the 5th stanza of PKs, Bosie Miles' diving stop on a low shot attempt saved what would have been a season-ending goal. Brookwood still needed to make another attempt to stay alive and Eliza Miller delivered.

After five attempts by each side, the game was essentially in an "extra innings" shootout of PKs. Both teams missed their 6th attempt and scored their 7th, with Caroline Miller making hers to keep Brookwood alive. In the 8th attempt, Terrell's shot went wide left but Brookwood's went right at the opposing keeper.

The 9th, and what would be the final stanza of PKs, had two eerily similar attempts both aiming high for the center of crossbar. Bosie Miles made a leaping deflection for Brookwood and Hutton Daniel's shot attempt just snuck past the fingertips of Terrell's keeper and fell in underneath the crossbar. Brookwood's players and students rushed the field from the sideline.

The 2-2 (5-4 PKs) win advances Brookwood to the Quarterfinals. The Lady Warriors will host Frederica Academy Monday at Warrior Stadium with kickoff at 3:30 p.m.
