Kasten named new Director of College Counseling

Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Staff Report
THOMASVILLE -- Dr. Jeremy Kasten has been named the new Director of College Counseling at Brookwood School starting in the 2021-2022 school year. He currently serves as Assistant College Counselor under the mentorship of Bruce Hunter, Interim Director of College Counseling, in addition to teaching Spanish.

“In a lot of ways, I think that this is the perfect job for me based on my strengths as an educator,” Kasten said of his transition to this new role. “I am student-focused, patient, empathetic, dedicated, and a fast learner. I pour much of my energy into Brookwood, because I believe in the school, its mission, and the Brookwood community. I will continue to do this with college counseling and will always strive to create conditions for students to be successful in reaching their goals.”

Kasten has been a member of the Brookwood faculty for over five years as a Spanish teacher and has helped coach several athletics teams, including football, basketball, and tennis. Prior to Brookwood, he taught at both the high school and university level. He is a graduate of Purdue University for his bachelor’s degree and Florida State University for his master’s and PhD.

“The Upper School at Brookwood has the goal of preparing students not just to enter college, through the admissions process, but also to have the skills to complete college and graduate,” Upper School Director David Grooms shared. “An advantage of Dr. Kasten in moving into the role of Director of College Counseling is that he has taught the students and has a good understanding of their individual attributes. Dr. Kasten is a lifetime learner and will deepen his knowledge of the college admission process over time, while having a good idea about individual student needs. I am pleased that Dr. Kasten will remain in the classroom on a part-time basis to continue that direct connection to students.”

“I look forward to learning about different colleges and universities around the country, exploring the vast range of academic programs and fields of study, and creating relationships with admissions offices in the Southeast and beyond. More importantly, though, I look forward to spending more time with students to understand their ideas and goals, help them plan for college, and watch each one of them attend - and eventually graduate from - the college or university that is right for them. It will be rewarding to know that I had a small part in my students’ successful transition from Brookwood to the next phase of their lives.”
