Brookwood Athletics Announces New Hires Dettor and Mathis

Brookwood will have a few new faces in the Athletic Department this upcoming school year, as the Warriors bring in Will Dettor and Mario Mathis as coaches. Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Shane Boggs notes, “I'm excited about the additions of Mario Mathis and Will Dettor. We have hired two great men and great leaders. They will add to what is already a great athletic experience at Brookwood.”

Dettor will be the Warriors’ Defensive Coordinator for Varsity football, serve as an Assistant Athletic Director, and manage the strength and conditioning program for all of Brookwood’s student-athletes. Dettor brings 18 years of experience as a defensive coordinator with him to Thomasville. He arrives at Brookwood from Lanier County High School in Lakeland, Georgia where he was the Defensive Coordinator and Weightlifting coach the past two seasons. Prior to his time at Lanier County, Dettor was the Head Coach of Lake Weir High School in Ocala, Florida. Dettor’s previous coaching experience includes stops across the state of Florida at football powers Newberry, Palatka, Lake Butler Union County, and Florida State University School in Tallahassee. He also serves as the Co-Founder and Commissioner of the Florida High School 7v7 Association.

“We’re extremely excited to be a part of the Brookwood family. Having the connection within our family of my fiancé having gone to Brookwood is great,” said Dettor. “I’m looking forward to working with the student-athletes across all sports in the strength and conditioning program and getting back into athletic administration at the school level. Coaching football has been a big part of my career and I can’t wait to start working with our players.”

Coach Dettor has been a success at every school he has invested in. He has worked with several tremendous coaches over the years. Will brings a combination of knowledge, experience, and consistency and he will have a tremendous impact on our student-athletes,” said Boggs.

Mathis will coach Outside Linebackers for the Warriors’ Varsity football team this fall and also be the Defensive Coordinator for Brookwood’s Middle School team. He will teach 6th through 9th grade Physical Education classes. Familiar to the Brookwood community already, Mathis will continue assisting the Girls Basketball and Girls Soccer programs at all levels. Mathis was an assistant coach for the Lady Warriors state champion basketball team this past season. Prior to coaching at Brookwood, Mathis worked on staff for the Florida State University football program in the Seminoles’ recruiting department. After graduating from Thomasville High in 2013, Mathis played four seasons at linebacker for University of Central Florida before finishing his eligibility on FSU’s 2017 team as a graduate transfer.

“I’m excited to be at Brookwood,” said Mathis. “I’m looking forward to being a positive influence and a light in all these students’ lives across campus.”

Coach Mathis has earned the respect of the Brookwood community. That made for a seamless transition when this position came open. Mario has displayed a knowledge of the game and a desire to be a light to those that he works with,” Boggs remarked.
