Brookwood Third Grade Finalist in National Book Contest
The Third Grade Class at Brookwood School has been announced as finalists in the 2018-2019 National Book Challenge hosted by Studentreasures Publishing. For this honor, the class will receive a $50 gift card, plus a published author certificate for each student. Each of the 27 third-grade authors were recognized for their contributions to their book, “Thankful Third Grade Turkeys,” which was published earlier this year through Studentreasures’ free publishing program.
Students in Mrs. King and Ms. Hall’s third grade classes came up with the idea for “Thankful Third Grade Turkeys,” when thinking about things that make them thankful. The third-grade authors put forth their best effort, researching, writing about, and illustrating their thankful book, including being thankful for football, food and family, before they sent their completed pages to be published.
"Throughout the entire process, from brainstorming, writing the first draft, revising, editing, and producing the colorful illustrations, students worked together and were eager to share their written pieces. My favorite part was the book reveal party that was held in the Williams-Parker Library on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. This was the first time that both students and parents were able to see the publication. We plan to incorporate this writing project into our annual curriculum, while launching a new theme each year,” said teacher Ms. Hall.
As a finalist in the one-and-only National Book Challenge, Mrs. King and Ms. Hall’s class book was selected from entries across the country and awarded as a Top 50 book based on its originality, creative storyline, and colorful illustrations. This nationwide contest was open to more than 800,000 books that were submitted to Studentreasures for free publishing this school year.
