QUITMAN– The Brookwood Lady Warriors Softball team is off to a 2-0 start this season after wins against Brooks County and Atkinson County on August 9th.
The Lady Warriors started out fast putting five runs up in the top of the first before the Lady Trojans responded with five runs of their own to tie the game.
Brookwood answered back with three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take down Brooks County 10-5.
Ava Bodell was solid in relief of starter Josey Holifield. Allowing no hits or runs in two innings of work with five strikeouts. She also did well at the plate, racking up two hits with one being a homer and an RBI.
Freshman Hadley Halbig delivered also with a hit and two RBI.
“I challenged the team to be aggressive and to bring the energy in the first game against Brooks County.” Brookwood head coach Von Still said. “They answered the call by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. You could tell the players were a little nervous as we gave up 5 runs and committed 4 errors in the field. But I was extremely impressed how the team bounced back and played a very clean game by keeping Brooks County scoreless for the rest of the game.”
Still continued to say, “It felt great to get our first win of the season and to accomplish our goal of “Winning the Opener”.”
Game two: Brookwood 10 Atkinson County 5
In their second game of the day, the Lady Warriors did well against the Lady Rebels.
Atkinson struck first, following a quick two outs and issuing a couple of walks. A line drive in right brought home the first run of the game for the Lady Rebels.
Brookwood did bounce back in the second, as Freshman Katybelle Bennett led off the inning with a single into center. Following a strikeout, Lyla James West stepped up to the plate, realizing the situation, Bennett stole second and then third.
With the tying run 60 feet away, West hit a groundball back up the middle to score Bennett to tie the game.
Atkinson responded again, taking back the lead in the bottom half of the second.
The Lady Warriors went on the attack again as Bodell reached on an error, then advanced to second then third on two wild pitches.
Audrey Harrison got the ball in play and made it to first on an error by the second baseman. While Bodell scored to tie the game again.
A groundout by Bennett put runners on second and third. Then a four-pitch walk loaded the bases for the Lady Warriors.
Facing another two out scoring opportunity. West delivered again, knocking a bases clearing double into left, to give Brookwood a three-run cushion.
The game continued to go back and forth as the Lady Rebels erased the three-run lead, scoring three of their own to keep the game even.
In the fourth inning, the Lady Warriors caught fire. Lilianna Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk, then back-to-back wild pitches again put the go-ahead run on third.
Next, Hollifield hit a hard grounder to the shortstop and plated Gonzalez to take the lead.
After Bodell singled to center, Harrison hit one by the second baseman to score Hollifield. Then Kendall Moore added on with an RBI of her own, bringing home Bodell.
The rally continued as Harrison scored on a single from Bennett; after drawing a walk to load the bases, West hit a grounder to short, plating Moore.
Atkinson did not recover as Brookwood held on to win 10-5.
West went 2 for 3 with five RBI and a double. While Harrison finished with a double of her own and a couple RBI.
“We played a good team in Atkinson County. We started a little slow, but our bats warmed up by the third inning.” Still said. “I was proud of how the team fought through adversity because we were down early. but we eventually clawed our way back to our second win. Our defense was much better in the second game, and I loved seeing the positive energy in the dugout! “
The Lady Warriors now shift their focus as they come home to face Pelham on Wednesday, August 20th at 6:00pm.
