Warriors look to bounce back under new leadership
THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - The 2024 high school football season couldn’t have gone worse for the Brookwood Warriors. The team struggled to find their footing, finishing with their first winless season in the program’s history.
Now Daryl Jones takes over trying to revitalize a school that is just a few years removed from a 10 win campaign. Jones spent time with the warriors in 2018 before coming on as a full-time coach last season.
“Brookwood has always been a very enjoyable place to coach. You got great student-athletes. You’ve got tremendous support from administration, and the facilities are awesome. It was just natural that when the opportunity opened up to take on a leadership role, I was happy to do it,” said Jones.
Despite the familiarity with the team, the challenges still remain. This time it may be something beyond the coaches control.
“We need numbers. If they are in the hallway, we’ll recruit them out of the lunch line. If someone moves into the community, please consider Brookwood.”
The small school struggling to keep up with some of their competition, but it won’t change Jones’ mentality or the culture he is trying to build. It’s a simple motto and one that has a ring to it.
No excuses.
“That was something we needed to address as a program. Without having to look back a bunch, there were just too many times where there were excuses top to bottom, inside and outside this program. So that was the one thing we decided to focus on inside the weight room during the offseason, then that carried over to summer workouts, which then carried over into preseason. We’re going to eliminate excuses because if you can eliminate excuses, all things are possible.”
The Warriors quest begins Friday August 15, 2025 at home against Westfield School.
