THOMASVILLE — The Brookwood Warriors fell short to the Southland Raiders, 48-6, on Friday night in a non-region game that left Head Coach Daryl Jones feeling frustrated.
The Raiders put up two touchdowns early in the first quarter, with Senior Allen Styck proving to be a valuable asset.
After taking a 7-0 lead, Southland quickly got the ball back after Brookwood was forced to punt it away. Styck got a first down on the 17-yard line before moving the ball upfield again to the five-yard line for a first down with 3 yards to go. But, it was Senior Garrett Love who found the endzone to go up 14-0 after John Fukanaga’s PAT was good.
The Warriors entered the 2nd quarter, looking to score. They were able to find a bright spot when Quarterback Pearce Hightower connected with Brinson King at midfield for a first down, but from there, the Warriors were forced to negative yardage and another fourth down situation.
It wasn’t long before the Raiders found the end zone again.
Mac McMichael completed a pass to William Webb for a first and goal. Inside the Warrior’s 5-yard line, Love walked in for the touchdown with 4:18 left in the half. The Raiders looked to take the lead to 21-0, but James Mizell came in clutch to block the kick.
“That was a good effort on James’ part,” Jones said.
As the clock wound down, Styck would find the end zone one last time before the half. With 35.5 seconds left, Styck took it to the house with a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Fukanaga made the extra point, and the Raiders headed into the locker room with a 27-0 lead.
Coming out of the half, the Raiders picked up right where they left off.
Jamarcus Walker carried the ball to the Warriors’ 2-yard line for first and goal, where the defensive line was no match. Walker walked it into the end zone on the ensuing play with 10:15 left in the third quarter.
Up 34-0, the Raiders’ powerhouse Styck found the ball again with 5 minutes to go. Styck took it 62 yards for another Raiders touchdown.
The Raiders would score once more before Brookwood got its lone touchdown.
Hightower got the ball and carried it back for a touchdown return with 4:45 left in the game. The PAT was no good, ending the night with a score of 48-6.
While Jones was excited by Hightower’s touchdown, he expressed frustration with the total domination Southland had over the Warriors. “
When you get totally dominated on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, it’s really tough,” he said. “I’d imagine we will see some glimmer of hope in the film review.”
Jones admitted he did not see the blowout coming.
“I didn’t realize how superior they were on the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, and I’ve got to do a better job of analyzing that and finding a way,” he said.
Jones said he hopes to see his team more physical up front as they travel to Frederica Academy next Friday in another matchup outside its classification.
