Brookwood hits the road again

THOMASVILLE — The Brookwood Warriors hope they’re road warriors again tonight. Brookwood will make the long trek — though not quite as long as the one the Warriors made in their last game two weeks ago to Loganville Christian — to face Heritage in Newnan tonight. With the region they are in — and with the potential for such road trips in the GISA playoffs — the Warriors may have to get used to such destinations as Loganville and Newnan.
“It’s going to be the new norm for us,” Warriors coach Shane Boggs said of the lengthy journeys. “We’ll make two of these trips a year. And where we are, ours are longer.”
The veteran coach said he was pleased with how his team performed at Loganville after the long bus ride. The off week between the 50-22 win at Loganville Christian was beneficial for the Warriors, Boggs said. “It was great,” he said. “It was productive. We had a couple of guys that needed that extra week. We expect to have everybody ready for (today).” The Warriors, now 4-1, have reeled off three straight wins, having outscored their foes 137-29 in that span. Boggs hopes the break doesn’t have a detrimental effect on the Warriors’ recent momentum.
“I think that’s the trade off,” he said. “The conversation has always been to have the break so you can get guys healthy but that can offset your sharpness and execution. Because our team was very purpose driven lastweek, we’ll be OK.” The Warriors have had a good week of preparation for Heritage, Boggs acknowledged. The Hawks, 5-1, are coming off a 15-14 win over Southland. They won their first four games in one-sided fashion, each decided by double digits.
Beating Heritage, Boggs said, will take all three phases of the Warriors’ game.
“They are a talented team and a well-coached team,” he said. Heritage has a big offensive line, Boggs noted, along with great skill players, including running back Andrew Rich. “They have speed guys on offense,” he said. “They have big linemen. They are massive. They are lean and move well. They are right up there with some of the biggest teams we’ll go up against this year. They have a great secondary and great linebackers.”
Boggs has been encouraged by how well the Warriors have played on offense, defense and special teams, particularly over the last three games “We’re improving in all three phases,” he said. “We’re starting to developsome consistency.” Tonight’s game begins a critical stretch for Brookwood, which begins the region schedule next week. For the next few games, Boggs doesn’t see any favorites or underdogs and believes each of the contests can come down to one team either making a mistake or making a crucial play. “There is a lot of parity in our region and in the top eight,” he said. “We’re going to have to bring our ‘A’ game.”
