Brookwood wants more spark from offense
CAMILLA — When Brookwood returns to the field Friday night for its home opener, the Warriors will be looking for better offensive execution than they displayed against Westwood last week.
Though the Warriors notched a 17-6 season-opening victory, they were held to just 72 yards passing and were flagged for a holding call that negated a 93-yard touchdown run. “I thought we were starting to close in on an identity. You look at that 90-yard play that got called back, we’ve just got to fix that mistake. I feel like our identity, our approach there is still sound and it’s something we can be good at, but ultimately, this game is about fundamentals,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “We go back and watch it and we’ve got to get our hands in front and keep them tight and our elbows in and our thumbs up, and we’ve got a (touchdown) right there. I’m not worried about the system, I’m worried about the execution. That’s going to be a product of reps in the long run.”
Brookwood missed on 16 of 20 pass attempts, though Boggs is confident his quarterback Joe Parker and the team’s wide receivers will connect on more passes in the future.
“We’re behind the defense, literally eight times tonight, and we don’t usually go 0-for-8. I think if we could have hit two or three of those, it just changes the whole complexion of the game,” Boggs said. “Throughout the year we will hit them. I’m glad we can win when we didn’t.”
Brookwood will host Lafayette (Mayo, Fla.) on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.. Lafayette is a Class A school and went 9-2 last year.
Summer heat: The mid-August heat played a role in last week’s season opener. In the second half, both Brookwood and Westwood had several players cramping in their legs.
“I think a lot of times people will look at conditioning but you also look, you’ve got to get acclimated to this heat. We have not been outside near as much as we’d like to be and that’s to some degree a product of our heat policy and also all the lightning we’ve had,” Boggs said. “We literally had lightning impact our last six practices (lastweek).”
