Warriors ready to build on scrimmage, offseason

THOMASVILLE — There is much to build on — and build from — followingBrookwood School’s scrimmage last week against Bessemer Academy, according to coach Shane Boggs.
The Warriors lost to Bessemer in what was the Alabama school’s season opener. They open their 2018 tonight at 7:30 in Camilla against the Westwood
Wildcats. The biggest thing to fix, to Boggs, is the number of pre-snap penalties his team incurred last week.“We had them on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We had several on offense and a couple of key ones on defense. Those are easy things to fix.”One of the encouraging signs from the scrimmage was a fourth-down stop last week agains the Rebels. Brookwood’s defense stopped them on a fourthand- 1 at the 40-yard line.
Brookwood’s defense also came up with three takeaways, the offense had several big plays of its own, including Joe Parker’s 80-yard pass to Kurtis Brown and throws to JacobLauderdale that covered 30 yards and 40 yards for scores.
“They’ve got those two good backs and we stuffed them,” Boggs said of the fourth-down play. “We forced three turnovers on defense. We had a lot of shot plays on offense.”
The Warriors pass protection was good at times, Boggs pointed out, and Parker also beat pressure other times. Boggs also was pleased with the running plays on the perimeter.
“There is a ton we can build on,” he said. “There is the old saying about your biggest improvement comes between game one and game two, and a lot of times it’s just those pre-snap things and alignment.”
Boggs also has been thrilled with how his team has responded since the end of last season. “I think they have been a really hungry team,” he said. “It started the Monday after that last game and they were back to work in numbers. It’s been very consistent up to now and I expect we will make thatbig improvement.”
