Summer Send-off: Max Beverly

Over the next few days, Brookwood Athletics will be highlighting our athletes from the Class of 2018 who are transitioning to their time in college. Today's is Max Beverly, who will be going to Sewanee: The University of the South in Monteagle, TN to study and be a member of the Tigers football team. To read Max's Q&A, click here!
Sewanee: The University of the South is a member of NCAA Division III and known as one of the premier academic institutions in the country. The Tigers athletics programs compete in the Southern Athletic Association. Max was starting Offensive Linemen and All-Region selection in 2017 during his senior season.

Describe a little of your recruitment process and how you chose Sewanee? What were you looking for in a college experience?

Max Beverly: I knew from relatively early on in high school that playing football in college was a possibility for me. I also knew that I preferred smaller schools located near the mountains. I did a few football camps for D III schools following both my sophomore and junior years and took some visits to schools. There ended up being a short list of colleges that I applied to. After hearing back from all of the schools, I came to the conclusion that I would rather play football in college than pass up that opportunity. That, combined with the academic excellence of Sewanee, lead to my decision to further my educational and athletic careers as a Sewanee Tiger.

What are you looking forward to most about your Freshman year of college?

MB: For my freshman year of college, I am looking forward to a lot of things. I am very excited to start practice and get ready for a great football season, but I am more excited to meet all of the people I will be going to school and playing football with.

How have you spent your summer as you transition from Brookwood to your next stop in collegiate athletics?

MB: I have spent a large amount of time this summer training for a few more years of football ahead of me. Because I have not been up at Sewanee yet this summer, I have had to hold myself accountable in doing my workouts and making sure that every single rep and drill is completed at a high level.

What differences at the collegiate level in your sport are you anticipating or preparing for?

MB: Brookwood has quality coaches and facilities that are on par if not on a higher level than any college I have visited. The biggest difference I am expecting to experience is the quality of the players who I play alongside and play against. For example, I’m expecting there to be quite a difference in a 22 year-old football player and an 18 year-old football player.

What's a lesson or skill you've learned playing at Brookwood that will help you at the next level?

MB: Through the leadership of various coaches and players at Brookwood, I have learned what it means to buy into a system and put forth all of your effort. There were so many times throughout my time playing football at Brookwood that guys would do their jobs knowing that they wouldn’t be on the highlight reel because of it. When people bought in and trusted the system it really made a huge difference on the field. That is a lesson I won’t forget from my time at Brookwood.

Any advice for younger Warriors at Brookwood aspiring to play at the collegiate level?

MB: I do have some advice for younger students who are considering maybe playing a sport in college. First, I would advise students to be a part of any sports program that they’re interested in. Every sport builds on another sport and everybody can play a meaningful role for a team. Even if someone does not have the typical skill set or build of a basketball or soccer player, at a school like Brookwood, there will be a scenario where that person will need to play meaningful minutes if he or she buys into the program. Every team is like a tool box and different situations call for different tools. In short, I would advise students at Brookwood to work as hard as possible and to do whatever it takes to get other students to do the same.
