Brookwood students visit White Oaks Pastures

Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Staff Report
Last week, Brookwood School’s 10th grade AP Human Geography class went on a field trip to White Oaks Pastures in Bluffton, Ga. as part of their unit on sustainable agriculture. White Oaks Pastures is a farm that operates one of only two on-farm USDA-inspected abattoirs in the country; their poultry abattoir is also one of a very few in the United States. The students toured the property and learned about the process of organic ranching, from field to market.
White Oaks Pastures produces cattle, sheep, goats, swine and poultry on the Serengeti Rotational Grazing Model. This fifth generation farm has a Certified Organic vegetable garden, pastured egg operation, and is about as close to a zero-waste facility as you can get.
The class enjoyed lunch at the farm’s restaurant. After lunch, they explored the Kolomoki Mounds State Park, one of the largest and earliest Woodland period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States, and the largest in Georgia, constructed from 350 CE to 600 CE. Discussion focused on site, situation and what makes a city/ civilization, all important concepts to AP Human Geography.
