THOMASVILLE — Brookwood School had four athletes sign to play their respective sports at the next level on Wednesday.
Offensive lineman Max Beverly and tennis player Thomas Harrison each signed with the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Softball players Landry Joyner and Dara Moore elected to continue their playing careers at East Georgia State College and Young Harris College, respectively.
Beverly was an all-region selection for the Warriors for the 2017 season.
He will look to have an easy transition from one small school to another.
“I think it’s a really good school academically,” Beverly said. “It was one of the better schools I got into. I like the football program a lot. It’s a new coaching staff, big improvement,so that’s something I want to be part of.” Harrison will join Beverly north of the Georgia- Tennessee border. He had his mind made up for a while now and was finally able to sign onWednesday. “I was looking for an academically challenging school, but also a school that I can play tennis at,” Harrison said. “Sewanee was my happy medium of both. “My history teacher went there. He’s probably one of my favorite teachers. I don’t know if subconsciously that was a deciding thing but I’m excited to be going to the same school as him.”
Joyner and Moore, two GISA allstate selections who were leaders of Brookwood’s 2017 softball team, were also glad to remain at small institutions.
“I like the size of the school,” Joyner said. “It’s really little, so that helps my personality.”
Brookwood softball came one win short of a region championship in Joyner and Moore’s last year. Moore is a catcher and Joyner saw time as a pitcher and at first base. Both were leaders, and they hope to carry that experience into the collegiate ranks.
“It was a very exciting year,” Moore said. “The role of being a leader is everything you want it to be. I wouldn’t have it any other way. All the girls looking up to you, it’s just a good experience.”
