Brookwood debate team wins state title

On Saturday, January 20, Brookwood School traveled to Mercer University in Macon to compete in the GISA Public Forum Debate state championship. Schools are permitted to send two competing teams and two alternates.Competing for Brookwood were juniors Julia Johnson/Raleigh Rollins and Caroline Wolff/Evans Dodys ‘19. Alternates were sophomore Madeline Gordon and freshman Lizzy Rollins. In preliminary rounds, Johnson/R. Rollins achieved a record of 4-0 and Wolff/Dodys a record of 3-1. This advanced both teams to the semifinals to face two teams from Westminster School of Augusta.
In 2-1 and 3-0 decisions, both teams from Brookwood defeated Westminster’s teams, making Brookwood’s teams co-state champions. This is Brookwood’s first state championship since 2012 and after falling to Westminster in the finals for the past two years.
In addition, both R. Rollins and Johnson were selected as two of the five top speakers in the state. Johnson took home the honor of “Top Speaker.”
