Thompson leads Brookwood over NFC for girls consolation title
THOMASVILLE — Brookwood’s girls basketball team did not achieve its goal of claiming the girls championship at the second annual Holiday Hoops Classic, but they may have achieved the next best thing.Playing in the consolation championship game after working their way back to the main floor, Brookwood’s girls jumped ahead of North Florida Christian early with a big first half run, eventually taking a 59-40 win on Friday.
Ann Murray Jackson and Jordan Thompson each made shots to pace the Warriors to a very early 6-0 lead, but the Eagles made it 6-5 with 4:44 left in the first quarter. After pulling way to a 10-5 advantage with 3:49 left in the frame, Jackson made a tough one-handed shot to make it 17-7. From there, the Warriors began their longest run of the game, with Thompson adding a fast break layup to make it 23-7. Thompson, who led all Brookwood scorers, ended her game with 27 points, a career high.Brookwood continued its long stretch of unanswered scoring into the second half. The Warriors’ run, which went to 13-0 with 4:05 left in the second, finally ended with 3:21 left until the half. A shot from Erin Lewis gave Brookwood a 32-9 lead, but NFC took advantage of some Warrior turnovers to narrow the gap to 32-14 at the break.
The Eagles went on a small run of their own in the third quarter, but five points from Thompson helped Brookwood maintain its edge. The Warriors went into the fourth with a 14-point advantage, which only grew from there on the way to the victory.
