Softball Wins Tiebreak Game over Tiftarea, Clinches a Host Site in GISA Playoffs

After splitting two games in the regular season against a strong Tiftarea Panther team, the Lady Warriors defeated Tiftarea yesterday 4-1 in a game to determine seeding in the GISA Playoffs starting next week. Because the Warriors won the coin flip and hosted Tuesday's game, they were forced to play as the visiting team on the field and bat in the top half of each inning. The game got off to a poor start for the Warriors, with all three batters striking out to start the game and the Panthers loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Warriors were able to maintain composure. A hardhit grounder right at shortstop Jessie Wortman allowed a forceout to catcher Dara Moore for the first out of the inning. An infield fly to Wortman for the second out, followed by a grounder to pitcher Landry Joyner allowed the senior to work out of the bases-loaded, nobody out jam in the bottom of the first.

The Warriors offense threatened in the top half of the third inning, getting runners on 1st and 3rd, but were unable to plate any runs. Tiftarea took the lead on a Brookwood error in the bottom half. The defense was solid afterwards, aiding Joyner to work out of another jam and only surrender one run.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Wortman's bunt single scored Anna McBride from 3rd base to tie the game 1-1. The Warriors tacked on another with Dara Moore's hard hit ball to 3rd base, which allowed the GISA All-Star to reach 2nd base on an error from Tiftarea's 3rd baseman. The play scored Wortman in the process to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

After a momentum sustaining bottom of the fifth where Joyner worked a perfect half inning, the top of the sixth inning saw more Warrior offense. With Abbie Lee and Abbie Bustle standing on 2nd and 3rd, Wortman ran out an infield single to score the pair of Warriors and give Brookwood a 4-1 lead.

The Warriors maintained the 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Panthers hit three deep fly balls, all to the fence, and each Warrior outfield took their turn helping end the game. Anna McBride and Mollie Vick both made catches with their backs against the fence to get the first two outs of the inning. The game-ending out was a highlight catch by Anna Stencel, reaching over and robbing a Panther home run to finish the game.

The win clinched the 2-seed in GISA Region-3 AAA, which leads to the Warriors hosting Bulloch Academy in next week's AAA playoffs. The Gators are the 3-seed from GISA Region-2. The best-of-three series will be on Tuesday October 10th with Game 1 starting at Noon and Game 2 scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The if necessary Game 3 would be at 4:00 p.m.
