Brookwood boys excel at State track and field meet

The fastest man in the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA) is still a Brookwood Warrior. Senior Destin Moore made sure of that at the recent Class 3-A state track and field meet.

He successfully defended his state titles in both the 100 meters and 200 meters. Moore ran away from the field in the 100 meters to a new state record time of 10.77 seconds. He also established a new school record in the 200 meters with a time of 21.96 seconds.

Mario Mathis, Assistant Track and Field Coach who will be the team’s head coach next year, was extremely impressed with his senior’s final performance.

“I’m proud of that kid,” Mathis said. “He worked his butt off to get to where he is. He deserves it. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Moore helped the Warriors surge to a fourth-place finish overall. Teammate T.J. Thomas also had a stellar meet as a junior. Thomas finished third in the 100 meters with a time of 11.08 and fourth in the 200 meters with a personal record (PR) time of 22.81.

Brookwood’s other top performers included sophomore Kent Grayson, who set a new PR of 2:05.37 in the 800 meters in surging to a third-place finish. Eighth grader Wesley Warren finished seventh in the 3,200 meters with a PR time of 101.95.

“I’ve worked with both of the boys that were in those races, T.J. as well. He’s another electric kid as well,” Mathis said. “Then we had Kent Grayson. He finished third, and he’s only a sophomore. He set a PR for himself. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

“We were the smaller bunch out there. We’re always the underdogs, and we accept that sometimes. Everybody tries to judge the book by its cover when they see us. We give them everything we’ve got,” Mathis concluded.
