‘Consistent’ Warriors aim to move up in the region

The Brookwood Warriors’ GIAA Region 3-AAA championship dreams likely rest on how they perform next week in a pivotal two-game series with the region leader Valwood Valiants.

Entering Friday night’s game with Tiftarea, Brookwood was one game back in the loss column of the Valiants who had won seven straight heading into Friday. The Warriors can make a region statement beginning Tuesday night at Valwood.

“In terms of region, we need to finish off Tiftarea and probably at least split with Valwood,” coach Daniel Funt said prior to Friday’s game with the Panthers. “I think we can get them. It seems like they’re playing really well right now.

“Our region is tough. I said it at the beginning, it was going to be a bloodbath, if you will. The teams are just so competitive. We’ve just got to continue to show up and play our best ball.”

Brookwood will host Valwood on Friday, April 14.

Brookwood had won its previous two region games entering Friday night. It dispatched Tiftarea 4-1 on April 4 which followed a 9-5 decision over Terrell Academy on March 23. Funt hopes his team has found momentum following Thursday’s 3-0 win over Maclay (Fla.).

“I feel like we’ve just been in a valley a little bit, and hopefully the big win on Tuesday will help us climb out of that valley and look forward to getting in a groove,” Funt said.

Brookwood started the season 11-6 and 3-2 in region play. The Warriors have won just as many games on the road (6-2) as they have at home (5-1). Funt credits his team’s success to its cohesiveness and experience.

“We had a couple of wins early in the season against a couple of good opponents. We’ve won tight ballgames,” Funt said. “Being in those situations, they help you win those type of games. It’s a team game. At times we’ve pitched it really well and that bales out the offense a little bit on the days we don’t swing it well. We’ve had some days where we’ve swung it really well and didn’t pitch it or play defense quite as good. This year, overall, we’ve been a lot more consistent.”
