Brookwood girls basketball team waits for its state playoff fate

THOMASVILLE – Brookwood’s girls basketball team fell short of its bid for a GIAA Region 3-AAA championship. Now the Lady Warriors have their shot at state.

Brookwood will find out on Saturday who it will play in the first round of the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 21-22. The Lady Warriors are currently slotted in the No. 10 position in the power rankings, which means Brookwood would have to travel for the first round.

“On those power rankings, we’re 0.6 away from hosting at the No. 8 position; 8, 9 and 10 are really close to each other,” Brookwood coach Todd Webb said. “(Tuesday) night’s game will help our strength of schedule just like the rest of our region games have.

“There’s a lot of question marks and a lot of different scenarios we could be in on Saturday.”

Terrell Academy knocked off Brookwood 44-34 on Tuesday in the region tournament. The loss ended Brookwood’s two-game winning streak.

The Lady Warriors finished the season with just one region one. However, that speaks more to the strong region this year.

“The region is probably more stacked this year than it’s ever been. It has four of the top five teams in the state, the No. 1, 2 and 3 teams in the state. It doesn’t matter who you play, it’s a tough game,” Webb said. “I was pleased (with Tuesday’s game). We won in pretty much every phase of the game except for turnovers. We had too many turnovers.”
