State Basketball Playoffs start this week for local schools

THOMASVILLE – The state basketball playoffs will begin this week across the state. Many of the area’s teams will be traveling for first-round matchups.

On the girls side, the Thomasville Lady Bulldogs, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-3A, will travel to Region 2 champion Mary Persons on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Thomasville is 12-14 after losing to Carver-Columbus (93-37) and Dougherty (52-49) in last week’s region tournament. Mary Persons is 23-4.

Thomasville’s Laila Harvey was also recognized last week with first-team all-region honors. Misprecious Thomas was named to the second team, while Ra’Kiyah McQueen, Dallas Hill and Brianna Redding were named honorable mention.

The Thomas County Central Lady Yellow Jackets, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-6A, will travel to Region 2 champion Brunswick on Wednesday. Central is 17-8 after losing to Tift County (61-55) and Lee County (51-50 OT) in last week’s region tournament.

The Brookwood Lady Warriors will travel to Frederica Academy on Tuesday in the first round of the GIAA Class 3-A playoffs. Brookwood, ranked No. 10, is 13-14, while Frederica, ranked No. 7, is 1510. The winner will play Southland Academy.

On the boys side, the Cairo Syrupmakers, the No. 4 seed from Region 1-4A, will travel to Region 2 champion Baldwin on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Cairo is 13-14 after losing to Bainbridge (52-40) and Shaw (73-63) in last week’s region tournament. Baldwin is 16-10.

Brookwood’s boys will host Lakeview Academy on Wednesday in the first round of the GIAA playoffs. The Warriors are ranked No. 8 following Saturday’s 60-38 loss to Southland Academy in the Region 3-AAA championship game. Brookwood is 22-7.
