THOMASVILLE – Brookwood’s girls and boys basketball teams are off to strong starts on the hardwood this year. Brookwood’s girls are 5-0, while the boys squad is 6-1.

The Lady Warriors stayed undefeated following Saturday’s 39-26 victory over Georgia High School Association Class A Brooks County. Brookwood has also posted wins this year over Cairo, GeorgiaChristian and Jefferson County (Fla.) twice.

“This team really plays for each other and competes so hard. We take pride as a program in competing, loving your teammates and making selfless plays for each other,” Brookwood coach Todd Webb said. “This group has really embraced that concept, and it’s visible through their performance on the court.”

Brookwood has excelled on offense this year and been stifling on defense. Ainsley Jacobson leads a team averaging 42.4 points with 11 points per game. Brookwood’s girls are also limiting opponents to 18.8 points with 32 turnovers.

The Warriors team dropped its first game on Saturday, losing to Brooks County 56-49. Brookwood started hot with wins over Community Leadership Academy, Highland Christian Academy, Baker County twice and Jefferson County twice.

Chris May leads Brookwood with 14.6 points per game, with teammate William Harrell not far behind at 13.6 points. It’s an impressive start for Brookwood and first-year coach Nate VanDuyne.

“We have a group that is continuing to improve the more we play together,” Van-Duyne said. “We have gotten better each time out. Now that we finally have our entire team together, we are now seeking to find the best lineup of players that compliment each other and play well together.”

Both teams will return to the court on Tuesday, as they will host Westwood. The girls game will tip off at 6:30 p.m.
