Warriors improving during early summer schedule

THOMASVILLE — The first part of the summer schedule was a win for the Brookwood Warriors football team.

It participated in multiple 7-on-7 camps, competed against top-quality competition and has improved tremendously over the past several weeks, according to Brookwood coach Shane Boggs.

“It’s been great. We’ve experienced highs and lows, which is great. We’ve gone against somereally good people,” Boggs said. “With the exception of one or two days out of this first month, I feel like we got better every time out. We went to Central Florida, over to Charleston Southern and then to South Carolina and came back to Florida State this past Wednesday. We had a really good day down there as well.”

The Warriors experienced success during their first trip to FSU this summer and made the semifinals in that 7-on-7 camp. Brookwood lost to Booker T. Washington out of Miami (Florida),even leading after a couple of drives.

What makes the Warriors’ summer slate so beneficial is they have competed against teams from all over the Southeast. That is essential in preparing Brookwood for the upcoming season in the GISA.

“When you’re competing, whether it’s 1-on-1, 7-on-7 or 11-on-11, ultimately, football does come down to 1-on-1 matchups,” Boggs sid. “It’s a great opportunity to compete. It’s a great opportunity to learn how to play together; what the linemen ought to look like.

“There’s just so many details that go into every play. That competitive fire in these kids is ultimately going to be the biggest factor in defining our success. I think we’ve embraced upper level competition. We’ve gone against so many great teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina so far. Our guys have really accepted the challenge.

“Some of them you see play on ESPN. That’s been fun for them. We’ve watched Booker T. a fewtimes over the years. You love going against different people scheme wise and also that have extreme physical gifts we see by some of these teams. There were teams parading 50 to 75 skilled guys around at these camps. It was crazy.

“(But) I can’t say enough about how our kids embraced the challenged, and we will be better because of that.”

Brookwood will travel to a Tennessee camp and a camp at Kennesaw State during the week of July 11.
