Three Brookwood Seniors Sign to Play Golf, Basketball Collegiately

Brookwood Athletics honored three members of the 2022 graduating class who have already made their college decisions known. Katherine Cook, Jay Sanders, and Ella Grace Squires each signed their letters of intent Wednesday morning in front of family, friends, and the Brookwood student body on campus.

Cook signed to play for the women’s golf team at Florida State University. She had been committed to the Seminoles for over a year, announcing her intention in October of 2020. "I just really narrowed it down over time and I've always wanted to compete at a high level. This is where I decided I would be able to best succeed," Cook said at the time. She shot a 76 at the 2021 GISA State Tournament, helping Brookwood win its first Golf State Championship since 1984.

Florida State’s women’s golf team has finished second and third in the ACC the previous two seasons of completed play in 2019 and 2021. Last year the Seminoles won the Louisville Regional and advanced to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, where they finished 9th overall - the best in program history. She becomes the second Division-I signee in as many years for Brookwood Golf after Jack Boltja signed with Georgia Southern last November.

Sanders signed to play for the men’s golf team at Berry College in Rome. He was All-Region and All-State as a Junior in 2021. For the 2021 State Champion Brookwood Golf team, Sanders averaged a 73 for the season. His best day was a 67, 5-under round for a home match against Tiftarea Academy at Glen Arven. He finished the season with remarkably consistent rounds of 71 and three straight days of 74, including at the Region and State Tournaments.

Berry College is located in Rome and competes in the Southern Athletic Association as a member of NCAA Division III. The Vikings finished 4th at the SAA Championship last year.

Squires signed to play for the women’s basketball team at Covenant College on Lookout Mountain. Squires was an All-Region and All-State selection as a Junior in 2021 for the Lady Warriors after finishing second in the state, regardless of classification, in blocked shots and 13th nationally in the category. Squires led the Lady Warriors in blocked shots last season and was second in scoring and rebounding. The Forward was a key component of the Warrior’s defensive design, protecting the paint and the rim. As a Sophomore, she was a main contributor for the 2020 State Championship run and played her best basketball of that season in the State Tournament.

Covenant College is located on Lookout Mountain and competes in the USA South Athletic Conference as a member of NCAA Division III. The Scots went 7-7 in USA South play last season.
