Lady Warrior Softball Walk-Off Winners vs. Southland

Brookwood Softball's home opener Tuesday went into extra innings and ended in dramatic fashion, with the host Lady Warriors walking-off on Kendall Boggs' hard hit to the left-center field gap. The 6-5 win over Region foe Southland Academy improves the Lady Warriors to 1-1 in Region play early in the season.

After falling behind early, an Abby Jones to Ann Murray Jackson double-play seemed to ignite Brookwood. Trailing 4-1 in the Top of the 5th, Jones caught a line drive and quickly threw to Jackson at first, catching the Southland runner in motion having not tagged up. In the Bottom of the 5th, Jones carried that momentum to the plate. Her bases-loaded single scored Jessie Wortman and Boggs to pull Brookwood within a run, trailing 4-3.

After no scoring action in the 6th or Top half of the 7th, Brookwood was still down 4-3 in their final frame. Boggs hit a double before moving to 3rd base on a fielder's choice. Kale Schofill, just an 8th grader and starting in centerfield, connected for a 2-out single through the left side to score Boggs and force extra innings.

In extra innings rules, a runner starts each inning on 2nd base. In the Top of the 8th, Southland converted their given runner to take a 5-4 lead and put the pressure back on Brookwood. In the Bottom half, a Southland throwing error to 1st base allowed Brookwood to tie the game with their given runner. Boggs dug in again and came in clutch, with a 2-out bases-loaded line drive to end the game.

Abby Lee pitched all 8 innings for Brookwood, limiting Southland to only score in the 2nd and 8th innings. The Lady Warrior defense was solid throughout, highlighted by the Jones to Jackson double play and a diving effort by Wortman at shortstop.

Up next for Brookwood is Thursday's trip to Camilla to play at Westwood School.
