Warriors hope to get chance to pick up where they left off

THOMASVILLE — Only a third of the way into their baseball season this year, the Brookwood Warriors find themselves sidelined because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The GISA suspended all athletic events through April 10, subsequently halting the Warriors’ great start to the 2020 season.

After a sweep of Tiftarea, Brookwood improved its record to 5-2. Now, the Warriors, like other high school baseball teams across the state, must wait to see when and if they’ll be able to play again this year.

“I certainly think that (the players are) upset, definitely not being able to play and all that. I think that they do understand as well,” Brookwood coach Daniel Funt said. “They’re definitely upset, absolutely. I think anyone would be. It’s something unprecedented, really.”

Brookwood concluded the week 2-1 against Region 3-AAA foe Tiftarea before the GISA quickly halted the season.

“It’s been crazy for sure. It’s happened very fast,” Funt said just after the season was halted. “We weren’t really talking about (the coronavirus) other than just a comment here or a comment there but nothing as serious as school may be canceled or games canceled. Then all of sudden Thursday evening, it started becoming a real possibility.”

In response to the growing pandemic, Brookwood is closing campus through April 6 and offering online classes for its students. However, Funt and his Warriors will not be able to practice for the foreseeable future.

Funt’s message to his team during the break is simple;

“A lot of things are out of our control right now. Just do the best to control what you can. It’s a really difficult situation,” Funt said.

The Warriors must be prepared for any scenario if the season resumes in a few weeks.

“That’s the other thing, I told the kids too; if we’re able to come back and play, it may be totally different,” Funt said. “It might be that non-region games are cut out and just figure out a region champion or seeding or something and play the state tournament. There’s all kinds of scenarios that could take place.”
