THOMASVILLE -
Dr. Wayne Clough visited Friday morning with Brookwood School students enrolled in Marine Biology and Physics. Clough served as President of Georgia Tech for fourteen years from 1994-2008. He then became the twelfth Secretary of the Smithsonian for six years. He retired in 2014.

Now also a published author, Clough’s book is entitled Things New and Strange: A Southerner’s Journey Through the Smithsonian’s Collections. The book relates animals and plants he knew when he was growing up in Douglas, Georgia and finding those animals and plants in the Smithsonian collections.

He spoke to Brookwood’s Marine Biology and Physics classes while visiting Thomasville. For Marine Biology students, he emphasized oceanographic research from Smithsonian institutes around the world. For physics students, he introduced the Astrophysical Observatory and its online resources.

Students were encouraged to visit the Smithsonian in person or online through the Smithsonian’s digital collections. Clough recommended they apply for student internships in the many museums that comprise the institution. He touted the value of using the Smithsonian online resources before a visit to enrich the visit. The Smithsonian’s digital collections and online resources are available at www.si.edu.
