Brookwood to induct 22 in first Hall of Fame class

Brookwood School will be inducting its inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class, with the ceremony set for October 17 at 5 p.m. in the Beverly Athletic Center.

The class of honorees include:
Herbert Butler ‘80

Herbert Butler was a multiple-sport star in the late 1970s for the Warriors playing football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. Butler was named all-region, all-sState, and team MVP in 1979 as a standout football player his senior season. A versatile player all over the field, Butler primarily starred at running back and defensive back for the Warriors. He had a penchant for the big play, including a 98-yard touchdown run, a 95-yard punt return, and four kickoff returns of 90 yards or more.

In basketball, he was named all-region three times and all-state twice. He was the team’s leading scorer for the 1978 and 1979 seasons, while being named the team MVP 1979 and 1980. As a freshman, Butler was a reserve on the 1977 undefeated, state champion basketball team. On the baseball team, Butler was an all-region player each of the two years he played in 1978 and 1979.

He went on to play football collegiately at Florida State University for legendary coach Bobby Bowden before graduating from Berry College.

Butler has served on the Board of Directors for 12 years for the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City. He resides in New York, where is the president of asset development for the Abraham Trading Company.

Scott Cheney ‘08

Scott Cheney excelled in four sports as a Brookwood Warrior: football, basketball, baseball, and golf.

A three-year starter at quarterback, Cheney was an all-region player in 2005, 2006, and 2007. He was named All-State in 2006 as a junior and 2007 as a senior. He led the Warriors to win the 2007 state championship, passing for 3,283 yards and 33 touchdowns on the season. He finished his career with 8,755 yards of total offense and 85 touchdowns in his Warrior football career. Later in the same school year, Cheney was the starting point guard on the 2008 state champion basketball team.

He garnered all-region recognition in basketball as a junior in 2007, all-region in baseball in 2007 and 2008 at second base and pitcher, and all-region in golf for the 2008 season.

Cheney went on to play football collegiately at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, where he received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award as a senior in 2011.

Currently he lives in Greenville, South Carolina with his wife Jordan. Cheney works as market president of TNB Financial Services South Carolina. In his free time, he volunteers with the Greenville Area Parkinson Society and Meals on Wheels.

Jarrod Lewis ‘04

Jarrod Lewis thrived in baseball and football as a Brookwood Warrior. A four-year starter at first base and pitcher, Lewis was a key component on two of the best teams in Brookwood’s baseball history, winning back-to-back state championships in 2003 and 2004.

He was known for his defensive ability, posting a .987 fielding percentage. He was just as impressive in the batter’s box, holding a ..404 career batting average with 101 hits and 81 RBI. On the base paths, he stole 23 bases and came around to score 73 runs.

He was named to the all-region team three times and was an All-State selection in his senior season of 2004, when he participated in the GISA All-Star Game. He was selected as the 2004 Male Scholar Athlete Award recipient.

Lewis went on to play collegiately at Shorter College, where he had a career fielding percentage of .951. He also carried a solid bat in the lineup, with a career batting average of .325.

After graduating from Shorter, Lewis went on to gain his master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He currently teaches at the Westfield School in Perry.

Rand Malone ‘77 Rand Malone lettered in three sports at Brookwood: basketball, tennis, and football. Known most for his talent on the basketball court, he was an integral

part of the 1977 team that won all 24 games, including the state championship.

A three-year starter for Warrior basketball, Malone averaged double-digit points and rebounds in each of those three seasons. He earned all-region for both the 1976 and 1977 seasons, all-state selection in 1977, and was named the team’s co-MVP as a senior.

He was the MVP of the 1977 state tournament after scoring a team-high 19 points in the semifinal against Windsor Academy and again leading the team with 21 points in the championship against Tattnall Square Academy. The Warriors won those final two games over the Macon schools in Macon to claim the state title.

On the tennis court, Malone won the region and reached the state semifinal as a Junior. As a senior, he started for the 1976 football team at running back and cornerback.

Malone graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina before obtaining his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia and residency from Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Since 1991 he has run his own private practice, Southeast Asthma and Allergy Center, here in Thomasville and Tallahassee.

Robert Shiver ‘04

Robert Shiver was a talented four-sport athlete as a Brookwood Warrior. He was a four-year letterman in football and basketball and lettered twice in both tennis and baseball.

His senior year, he was named all-region for football, basketball, and baseball while earning all-state in football and basketball.

Playing wide receiver and tight end for the Warriors, he caught 55 passes for over 1,000 yards in his junior and senior seasons.

He also started in the GISA SCISA All-Star Basketball game. He was a key player on two of the best teams in Brookwood’s Baseball history, winning back-toback state championships in 2003 and 2004.

After Brookwood, he played football collegiately at Auburn University. His freshman season, Auburn went 13-0, winning the SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl. He started for three years at long snapper, was named team captain his senior year, and went on to sign with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL.

Currently, he lives in Thomasville and is the vice president of Senior Life Insurance Company, where he focuses on the strategic growth of the company. He and his wife Lindsay have three sons named Grayson, Landon, and Rhett.

Savannah Singletary ‘14

Savannah was a Christian, a scholar, an athlete and friend to many at Brookwood. While she had many talents, her primary sport was basketball.

In the eighth grade, she played on both the varsity and middle school teams.

As a freshman in 2011, she received honorable mention all-region. She also competed in softball, soccer, and track and field.

Singletary was an avid equestrian. An accomplished hunter and jumper who competed in numerous horse shows, she won her division in 2008 at Horse Shows in the Park in Gainesville, Florida. Singletary was a beloved classmate of the Brookwood Class of 2014 and passed away from an accident in 2011. Her spirit remains vibrant throughout Brookwood and serves to remind us that each day is a gift, provides us the opportunity to love and serve, and is the day to make our mark on the world.

Megan Ward ‘03

Megan Ward commanded the tennis court in her time as a Brookwood Warrior.

She was a key contributor to the 1999, 2000, and 2001 teams winning the region and the 2000 state championship. Individually, she was a five-time all-region selection, winning the region championship in singles play four consecutive times. At the state level, she won the singles championship in 2000 and finished as state runner-up in 2001 and 2002. She was selected all-state four times in her career.
