Brookwood’s Walker posts a perfect score on the ACT

Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Staff Report
THOMASVILLE —Holland Walker, daughter of Andy and Bassha Walker of Boston, Ga. and a junior at Brookwood School, has earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam.
The ACT is a curriculum- based test that is used in the college admission process, and is accepted by all major four-year colleges and universities in the United States. In 2018, only 0.002 percent of all students who took the exam achieve the highest possible score.
“At first, I was in shock,” Holland said of her achievement. “I asked my friend if the ACT was actually out of 36.... All of my friends were really happy forme.” The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science, each scored on a scale of 1-36. A student’s total score is the average of the four test scores, and 36 is the highest score that can be earned on the exam.Holland’s parents found out about their daughter’sachievement when she called them from school.
“I always panic when one of my kids call during the day because you automatically think someone is sick or something is wrong,” Mrs. Walker said. But after the call, she “was just in awe. After we hung up, I was smiling and had tears at the same time.”
For Mr. Walker, the reality of his daughter’s achievement took a while to settle in.
“For the first week or two I kept waiting for them to send a letter saying, ‘Sorry, we made a mistake in grading,”’ he said. “I am just really proud that she has worked hard and opened doors for herself that were not options before.”
Holland has earned many other honors during this
school year, including the WoodmenLife History Award, a University of Georgia Certificate of Merit, and AAA-3 Region Player of the Year in soccer. She has also been named a junior class marshal for Brookwood’s upcoming commencement ceremony.
“I’ve received other academic awards and sports accolades during these past few years,” Holland says, “but this achievement has the most influence on my future in college and beyond. This opens so many more opportunities that weren’t there before.”
When asked how she prepared to earn her excellent score on the exam, Holland credits her teachers.
“Every class and every teacher (at Brookwood) pushes you to reach your best potential,” Holland says. “I believe the experiences Brookwood has provided me inside and outside the classroom have helped me immensely to attain my score.”
