Brookwood celebrates Earth Day

Thomasville-Times Enterprise
On Monday, April 22, Brookwood Lower School students dug in to celebrate Earth Day. Students in Junior Kindergarten through fifth grade had the opportunity to plant a plant in the school’s garden. Varieties were carefully selected to serve as both host and larva plants for butterflies, as the garden serves as a year-round outdoor classroom.

Students learned how to plant and weed and also how to identify the  parts of a plant, invertebrates, and other insects that reside in the garden.

Older and younger students were paired to plant to facilitate the project and build relationships.  Kindergartners planted in the garden with their fifth grade reading buddies and Junior Kindergarten worked with fourth and fifth grades.  Lower School science teacher Mrs. Lori Stauffer shared, “One of the activities I enjoy most about our Earth Day is seeing the interaction between different grade levels. Upper elementary students are paired with preschool students to work in the garden.”
